Meet Güray Ervin

Mustafa Oğuz Karslı

And the long-awaited moment has arrived, dear TEDx BahcesehirUniversity family. This year, with the joy of celebrating our 5th year, we are starting our blog post series. With this year's event theme, “Breaking Point”, we are sharing short profiles of our speakers so you can get to know them a little before seeing them on stage.

Who is Güray Elvin?

Born in 1975 in Urla, İzmir, Güray Ervin completed his education up to high school in İzmir. He started in journalism in 1988 as a darkroom technician at the İzmir bureau of the Hürriyet newspaper. Ervin describes how he got into journalism like this: “I'm from the group that is called ‘self-taught’ in the profession. In our profession, the ‘source of the water’ is Istanbul. I wanted to work in Istanbul too. In 1998, a call came at a time I never expected, and I reached my dream and moved to Istanbul.”

After working at Kanal D for 12 years, he went on to work at 24 TV, Kanaltürk TV and Al Jazeera Türk respectively. While working at Kanaltürk TV, he was wounded when the vehicle he was in came under fire while he was covering the war between Georgia and Russia.

At Al Jazeera Türk, where he worked for 6 years, he produced video news pieces telling human stories. Stories such as “The Railway Watchman” and “The Man Who Collects Paper” were shared thousands of times on social media within a short time. In this way, the stories of real people touched everyone's lives.

Ervin, who currently works as a news cameraman at TRT World, has received numerous awards in the “News Footage” category, including the Turkish Journalists' Association Achievement Awards. Ervin is also a holder of the Permanent Press Card.
